The reboot nobody asked for just out-earned the original, and the reason isn’t nostalgia. The first film was a comfort object; this one is a proper movie, and an audience that tuned out of the franchise years ago came back to find the thing they’d been told they already had.

Studios will read this as permission to greenlight every dormant IP in the vault. The smarter lesson is narrower: people didn’t want the old thing again. They wanted the old thing done like it meant it.
